The True Purpose Of Music

It has been a couple of roller coaster weeks for a certain young female YouTube/Twitter phenomenon. I'm sure you all know who I'm talking about considering the fact that she has been a Twitter Trending Topic for the last few weeks and has even been mentioned all over the world on various television shows.

Music is an extremely lucrative business and it is obvious that young teens want to become a part of this industry. They think they are 100% guaranteed overnight fame and fortune. Sadly for them, this is not how it works.

Most people understand that the music industry is a big game. This game needs to be played by the rules to succeed, although there are always exceptions. I would sound very naive if I said that natural musical talent always does the best in terms of media coverage and sales, but isn't this what we should expect?

The music consumer wants to listen to songs which conjure up emotion, whether happy or sad, we want to be made to feel something whilst listening to music. By "something", I don't mean how annoyed you are that the artist is singing with no feeling and with lyrics containing no intellectual value!

For me, the true purpose of music is to leave a positive impact on the listener. You may find this in many different forms, but stunning vocals and a great personality always have the biggest positive impact on me.

Kris Allen - Why Didn't I Buy This Album Sooner?!

I admit it. I'm very late jumping on the Kris Allen bandwagon.

It has taken me nearly 18 months to finally buy his self-titled album but on first impressions, I absolutely love it!

Many of you may know that I live in the UK and therefore struggle to find copies of albums which have never been promoted in the UK. Just like all the other cd's belonging to past Idol contestants, Kris Allen's cd was incredibly hard to find without ordering it online. Luckily for me, I managed to buy the only copy in my local music store on Monday afternoon without too much hassle!

I should probably tell you why I was so determined to buy his album:

I have been listening to a lot of 80's music over the last week and decided that I wanted to listen to "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by the British pop/rock band, Tears For Fears. I knew that my Father has their Greatest Hits album on his music shelf  but decided that I needed a quick fix and searched the song on YouTube. Scrolling down the search page, I came across Kris Allen's version of the song and instantly fell in love with him and his music. The next day I bought his album and the rest is history!

I love it when singers actually write or co-write their own music. It shows that they have so much more than a great voice. I feel that artists who write their own music really understand the true meaning behind songs and can connect to songs in such a special, unique way. I take the opinion that Kris Allen has this great ability along with my other personal favourite artists who write their own music like the lovely David Archuleta, Adele and The Hoosiers. 

Kris Allen's post Idol album is full of songs which fit perfectly into the pop/rock genre which I always find myself gravitating towards after a long, tiresome day. I can't fault any song on the album as they are just so beautifully written. One of my standout tracks is Red Guitar, which he wrote single handedly- it is stunning!

I'm now just waiting for the day when he announces that he will be coming to London to promote his music. Hopefully that day arrives soon!

Why didn't I buy this album sooner?!

Most Underrated Artists

Although we are all used to the music industry and media choosing to focus on only a handful of musical stars, there are so many other artists which just happen to go unnoticed who deserve to see more of the limelight.

I want to know who you personally think deserves more musical recognition in this day and age. Just by looking at my iTunes library, I can see about a dozen highly talented individuals and bands who are just not making a sufficient impact on the industry even though the music that they produce is technically stunning.

Inspirational Artists

In the second installment of the series all to do with who and what I find inspiring in the music industry today, I will be focusing on my top two Inspirational recording artists. These two artists share the same passion and commitment to music which makes me even more willing to support them with new music releases and  their lives outside of music.

1. David Archuleta

It may not come as a surprise to you that, once again, David Archuleta gets a mention! We live in a world where it is all too common for people in the media spotlight to take advantage of their situation and behave in a way in which is completely unacceptable, no matter how famous they might be. David Archuleta has never done this and without a doubt, he will never use his position to encourage negative or controversial press. He shows so much poise and dignity when taking part in interviews, and even when he is meeting the fans or making one of his highly anticipated YouTube video blogs, we can see how grateful he really is for his opportunity to make inspirational music. We know that he really cares about the fans and society as a whole due to the vast amount of time he takes personally speaking to his fans and actively raising money for the many excellent charities he chooses to support like Rising Star Outreach and Childrens Miracle Network. I talked to a group of eleven and twelve year old girls this week and many of them said that their musical idol was a certain young teenage boy with what they could only describe as "magical hair". I think you all realise who they happened to be talking about. Although they are entitled to their own opinion, I take the view that people like David Archuleta are more worthy of their love and support, don't you?

2. Adele

Adele knows what vocal perfection is and still manages to take her performances up to the next level. I have been a fan of her ever since she won the Critics' Choice Award at the Brit Awards 2008 and have enjoyed watching her go from strength to strength to conquer the US music charts. There is something incredibly refreshing about singers who can do what they do best without pulling any stunts to gain press exposure. Her voice has so many different dimensions and the viewers at home genuinely never get bored of watching her perform live on stage. She captures the attention of the audience with just her mind blowing voice and makes it seem as though pre-scripted movement or dancing is completely unnecessary. What I like is the fact that although it hasn't been an easy ride for Adele, she has finally got the recognition that she deserves all around the world. I love that other recording artists are full of praise about her album 21 and her current single. When other influential artists speak out and say that they look up to you and your music, you know that you are doing something right! We all know she has a bright future ahead of her and her fan base will continue to grow over the next coming months because of her great vocals.

There is so much more I could say about these talented, socially aware artists. I encourage you to think about the inspirational figures in your life which continue to make a positive impact on the world, or even just in your neighborhood.

American Idol Season 10- My Initial Thoughts

I love listening to all the Idol buzz each year. What really excites me is the fact that new singers, who actually have the vocal prowess to compete with the international pop icons of our day, are created season after season. Some of my favourite artists have taken part in the show and now hold strong positions as reputable recording artists in the music industry.

This season, I was fascinated to find out about the new rules and the new judges. Randy Jackson taking over as the "Simon Cowell" figure on the show slightly confused me as I'm so used to him being very relaxed when giving feedback to the contestants, but this season, he has really stepped up to the challenge of being head judge on the panel. As for the new rules, only time will tell! 

Something which did shock me was the elimination of practically half the contestants during the first week of the live shows. A great deal of incredible talent was lost and I do not think this strategy helped the show, the contestants or the voting citizens by any means. With such a large group of competitors, I believe the elimination stages from previous seasons worked well as its is much easier to get rid of two boys and two girls a week in comparison to the huge 11 contestants who were sent home last week.

Out of the contestants who were sent home after failing to win over the judges during their Wild Card songs, two singers really stood out for me; Robbie Rosen and Kendra Chantelle.

Both of these singers have a unique sound and it is refreshing to see that they are both happy to be themselves and make song choices based on their own personal likes and opinions.

What makes Robbie Rosen stand out from the crowd is his passion for songwriting and complete connection with his audience when he sings. Throughout every performance he gave on the show, I felt as if I was standing right there next to him on stage, something which shows me that he truly believes in what he is singing and has the conviction to back this up. As he loves to write songs, you can understand why he has this connection; the words in the song choices make sense to him, and as the audience, this helps us to understand the emotions he is trying to convey during the song. He is a phenomenal young artist who has so much success ahead of him. He is definitely on my list of artists to look out for in the near future!

Kendra Chantelle has such a beautiful, powerful voice which makes it seem as though she doesn't even have to try very hard to give an incredible performance. I thought she was vocally perfect on every single performance on the show which is extremely hard to do. Even if you are a credited music icon with a multi-million dollar recording contract in the 21st century, it doesn't mean that you can hit all the notes every time, but this young woman has the goods to do just that. I hope that a label picks her up fast as I want her album!

We will just have to wait and see what will happen to the AI contestants from this season, but in the mean time, I'm looking forward to hearing great things from Robbie Rosen and Kendra Chantelle.

CD's versus Digital Downloads

I love being able to go to my local music store and buy an album there and then. I always have and probably always will. There is something incredibly special about being able to pick up a copy of a cd from your shelf and look through the little booklet inside to discover a bit more about the artist and the album. Some may find this quite odd considering that I am a self-proclaimed music fanatic, but having the physical cd on my music shelf makes me a whole lot happier than looking through the music in my iTunes library on my laptop.

Last Friday, I ventured into my local music/dvd store in pursuit of finding a few more copies of The Other Side Of Down by David Archuleta to give as gifts. Of course, as I live in the UK, this is a much harder task to accomplish as his music is incredibly hard to find due to the lack of promotion in Europe. Whilst scouring through the music racks, I came across the section dedicated to single releases and was surprised to find that it still existed! You could call me naive but I was under the impression that people only bought singles online in the 21st Century! Saying that, I do have to admit that the singles section was minuscule in comparison to the  limitless amount of music you can find on the Internet legally at any one time.

Thanks to the ingenious creation of online music stores, it is not surprising that sales of physical cd's have dropped substantially over the last few years. My heart may be set on physical cd's but I do love the fact that you can listen to a song featured in an advert on the television, and just minutes later, that song can be yours for a minimal price by virtue of the Internet. Online music stores help to get that quick music fix when I am craving certain songs and I have no problem in saying that they are undeniably the way forward in terms of single sales.

Although digital downloads may be the easiest option in our fast driven, consumer based world which we live in, I still choose physical cd's over a download ninety per cent of the time. There has to be exceptions to the rule as some albums are only readily available in the UK on the legal music download sites. With all that said, I'll be sticking to my physical album rule in the near future. The albums on my music shelf hold sentimental value for me and that is something I hope will never change.

If you are wondering what happened in terms of my David Archuleta cd search, I politely asked the sales assistant to order a few more copies for myself and the store, but the reply I received in return was not so promising. Let's just say I will be buying more physical copies of TOSOD from an online vendor instead!

The Relationship between Record Labels and their Artists

I absolutely adore Kylie Minogue. It has to be said that she is still the original and ultimate pop princess even though she has been in the music and media spotlight for over twenty years. Kylie has the ability to get everyone into the party spirit as soon as they hear her pop classics like Spinning Around and Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Even though the world may love her, love for an artist doesn't always translate into album sales.

I came across this interesting piece of music journalism last night which made me question the motives of some record labels today:

Of course, we all realise that the media has the bad habit of reporting news completely out of context and the story might not be correct, but in this instance, it has given me the the opportunity to analyse the state of various records labels and how they choose to manage their artists.

I have always thought that labels should treat their artists as equals and that every artist should get just as much marketing and publicity as any other artist signed to the same label. I am definitely not an expert, but it is quite clear that some labels focus on the stars who are going to create the most media attention, normally by the use of creating a bold persona, instead of solely nurturing the pure vocal talent of an artist. It is not hard to understand why labels choose to go down this route.

In a world where everything can change within seconds due to to new technology like Twitter influencing the public, it is obvious that record labels are going to take the opportunity to grab hold of the media's attention to gain as much success for the artist and themselves as possible. It's all about The Next Big Thing these days. You may have had a Number 1 selling debut album and song two years ago, but if your label doesn't do a good job of promoting you when your next album gets released, the public will have already forgotten about you and moved on to the latest pop icon. It's a simple strategy which creates new stars and fortunes, but leaves the old musical talent to struggle for themselves.

Publicity is everything. Records don't get bought by the consumer without some kind of hype attached to it. Obviously, I have to emphasise that record labels are the key driving force behind most artists and that without a label, some artists will find it hard to keep afloat in the music industry today. Labels really are a vital source of information and guidance for the artist but this doesn't always mean that the artist and the label are going to see eye to eye over important matters.

Inspirational Albums

Have you ever listened to an album which has had so much of an influence on your life that you are left with no other choice than to spread this influence to all of those around you?

Whilst looking through my iTunes library last night, I found myself steering towards the same three albums. These three albums have changed the way I think about life and how I choose to present myself to the world. Although there are many other songs, albums and artists which have inspired me throughout the last few years, these magnificent creations really deserve to be given the spotlight:

1. The Other Side Of Down by David Archuleta

The word inspirational was made for this album. I don't think I will ever stop saying that David Archuleta is a vocal genius. Many, including myself, will say that this young man has the complete package when it comes to star quality; the looks, the incredible voice, the likeability factor and his obvious passion for charity and helping others. If that wasn't already enough for all the fans out there, he also truly has musical direction and knows what he wants to create for himself and his loyal fans.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most uplifting albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to in my life. The lyrics in his songs actually convey pure emotion, unlike a lot of songs which break into the charts these days! Look Around is definitely a pivotal track which makes me want to be a happy, more positive person with a clear outlook on life. I also think this track has one of the best intros I have ever heard! It has to be said that we should all be extremely thankful to have David Archuleta and his sensational, thought provoking music in our lives.

2. The Trick To Life by The Hoosiers

If you don't live in the UK or Europe, you may not have been formally introduced to this quirky pop trio. I'm happy to say that this was the first ever album which I completely understood and connected to every single message being revealed throughout the CD. It takes such skill to write something as varied and entertaining as this set of songs. This album just makes me stop and think, which is something that happens with all three of the records in question.

The highlight of the album has got to be A Sadness Runs Through Him, a song which sums up the world we live in today. As someone who loves digging deep into the the true meanings of lyrics, I came to the conclusion that this song was written to make people think about the reality of life and try to better ourselves from this. Then again, the true meaning behind the song could be completely the opposite and I may not be a very good lyric detective! Hidden musical meaning is also something which interests me greatly, but maybe that's a whole other topic to talk about at a later date!

3. High Hopes & Heartbreak by Brooke White

I like to see recording artists break the mould with their music. Changing things up may not always produce the best outcome, but when it does work, a masterpiece is created. Brooke White has a solid creative vision which completely undermines most other album ideas currently out in the music market. There is something very exciting about singer-songwriters like Brooke White who can compose an album full of songs with such a strong sense of style.

It's hard for me to pick a favourite track, but I do have to say that Phoenix just makes me incredibly happy. I could listen to the song all day without worrying about upcoming deadlines and the daily grind of life. Brooke's voice is absolutely unique, which is noticeably refreshing in this day and age.

I have often found myself smiling when listening to these albums, a sign which shows me how much of a positive impact they have had on my life so far. If you haven't already, take a look at these albums for yourself and see what kind of an impact they have on you.
